The town of Skibbereen is split between the civil parishes of Abbeystrowry and Creagh. It is located in the barony of West Carbery.
At one time, the town was called New Stapleton.
The poor law union of Skibbereen was declared January 12, 1839 and the first Board of Guardians was elected. At the time Skibbereen Union extended all the way from Mizen Head in Schull through Clonakilty. The Schull and Clonakilty unions came into being later, after the area suffered through the famine.

Skibbereen has been called "the capital of the Carberies."
Cork Road (N71) leads into town from the east. N71 continues west to Ballydehob and then abruptly angles north towards Bantry.
Southbound Market Street leads to Baltimore Road (R595), leading southwest out of town towards Baltimore.
Northbound R596 angles over from Townsend Street along Bridge Street to North Street. Continuing on North Street ignoring the Mill Road fork on the left, there is a traffic loop where N71 and R596 meet. About 500 feet to the west of the loop is R593, the northbound road to Drimoleague. About a mile east of the loop is the turn for northbound R637.
