District of Dunmanway
(Dún Mánmhaí)

Genealogy and History

Historical Description

The town of Dunmanway is in the civil parish of Fanlobbus. It is located within the poor law union of Dunmanway, in the barony of East Carbery, Western Division.

Dunmanway Union lies in the baronies of East Carbery (Western Division), West Carbery (Eastern Division), and West Muskerry.

Dunmanway Union is in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cork & Ross.

The town was chartered in 1693.

Sir Richard Cox, who served as Lord Chancellor of Ireland during the reign of King William III, built much of the town and also brought in a linen industry. The town was settled by many English colonists and was the scene of much violence (including sectarian), during the Anglo-Irish War and the civil war.

Thomas Hovendon (1840-1895), orphaned during the famine, ended up a famous American painter.

Sam Maguire (1879 - 1927), born in Mallabracka, recruited Michael Collins into the Irish Republican Brotherhood. He took the anti-treaty side during the civil war and was fired by the free state government and deprived of a pension as a result. There is a much-loved football prize named after him.
