(CJ 4/3/1756) – To be sett from the 25th of March next for any term, Cook’s-Vill, (within half a mile of the town of Youghall, and a quarter of a mile of the Four Mile Strand, in a fine air, with a delightful prospect of the Sea)….. Also the house with the out offices wherein Alderman Thomas Cooke, dwells in Youghall, is to be set from the 25th of March next, for any term. Proposals will be received by Alderman Thomas Cooke, in Youghall, who will shew the premises to any person inclined to take the same, separate or together. Youghall, Jan. 1756
(CJ 4/3/1756) – TO be let in the town of Youghall, from the 25th of March next or such term as shall be agreed, the house near the clock-gate, wherein Thomas Hough shoemaker lately dwelt. For particulars, enquire of Mrs. Catherine Roche, near said house, or Mr. Owen Callanan near South-gate, Corke.
(CJ 8/4/1756) – WHEREAS Jonathan Robinson of Youghall, Master of the Sloop Mary of Youghall, did lately exhibit an Advertisement against the Brig John and Hannah, of Liverpool, George Fowler, Commander. Now the said George Fowler, Commander, John Lea, Mate, and the rest of the ships company, made oath before me this day, that on Monday the … day of March last, this ship sprung a leak, which obliged them to bear away for Ireland, and on the 16th of said month in the evening, between Dungarvan and Youghall, met with the said sloop, Mary of Youghall, said Robinson, Master, standing of and on shore, and that the said George Fowler, Master, offered him the said Jonathan Robinson, any sum he would demand, to stay by him all night, or to run him into any place of safety, in order to save the life of the ships crew and to save the ship and cargo; whereupon, the said Jonathan Robinson, ask’d them, why they did not get out their boat and come aboard him, if they had a mind to leave their ship, upon which the said George Fowler, answered the said Jonathan Robinson, their boat was leaky, to which the said Robinson made answer, follow me, the said Fowler having then in his vessel, four foot and a half water, and both pumps choked and bailing water out, to keep her up, but being .. water logg’d, was not able to carry sail to keep up with said Robinson. AND WHEREAS, the said Robinson set forth in his Advertisement, that he shortened sail in order to accommodate the said Fowler; The said Capt. Fowler, and crew depose, they neither see the said Robinson shorten any said which the said Robinson kept in their sight, nor did the said Jonathan Robinson give them the said Capt. Fowler and crew any help or relief, or assistance whatever, for the preservation of their lives, ship of cargo; and that at twelve o clock at night, as the said Robinson would run for the harbour; but not meeting with the said Robinson and being strangers to the bar and harbour of Youghall, brought to an anchor in the bay, with seven foot of water in her hold, and was obliged to cut her cable, and let her drive a shore for the preservation of their lived, and of the said ship, so will leave the world to judge of the cruelty of the said Robinson, Sworn before me this 3d day of April. JAMES UNIACKE, Mayor of Youghall, George Fowler, John Lea, Thomas Milcher, Hugh Bleak, John Bouer, Richard Cottaman
1761 - 25 March. The Revenues receipts of Youghal amounted this year to £774.14.8. They had increased four-fold, in the twelvemonth. - 30 Oct. By a return to the House of Commons …the receipts of the port of Youghal were only exceeded by those of Dublin and Cork. Youghal ranked the third port in the whole kingdom of Ireland. - (The Hand-Book For Youghal, W.G. Field, 1896)
1762 - 20 March. Saturday. The Ships Union, Dove and Jolly Clothier, of and from Bristol for Cork, were along with three colliers, taken near the harbour of Youghal by a French privateer of 8 guns and 90 men. The commander landed 24 passengers on the island of Ballycotton, but took with him a party of recruits intended for Colonel Owen's regiment. On intelligence of this, the Expedition, cutter, from Cork, was sent in chase, but did not come up with them. She brought an account of another privateer being on the coast which was shortly afterwards taken. - 22 March. The Concord of Bristol, a letter of marque, which had sailed from Youghal to Newfoundland on the 16th, returned this day, bringing in the Elizabeth, of and from Rhode Island [America] for London, laden with furs, doe-skins, etc., valued at £3000, a vessel she had gallantly re-captured, 14 leagues S.W. of Cape Clear, from the Labardourdine privateer, 18 guns, of Bayonne. The Concord landed 11 prisoners, and sent her prize to Bristol. - (The Hand-Book For Youghal, W.G. Field, 1896)
1766 - A gentleman walked for a wager from Cork to Youghal and back in sixteen hours and a half. - (Tuckey's Cork Remembrancer)
1766 – Some Lands & Houses in Youghal and their tenants taken from an advertisement in the ‘Cork Evening Post’ of 1766.

1791 - The flourishing state of Youghal, at this time, is set forth in the notice of the town in the Universal Gazetteer, by R. Brookes, MD, published this year. 'The trade of Youghal, ' writes our Author, 'within these few years has much increased. A considerable share of mercantile business is transacted, and more oats are annually exported than from any other port in the kingdom; the goodness of its harbour, and the easy communication which it has with several inland towns and a large tract of interior country, by means of navigable rivers, together with its vicinity to the sea and other local advantages, have very much contributed to its present increase of trade and population. Considerable quantities of beef, pork, butter, etc., are annually shipped from hence; but the principal (traffic) consists in the exportation of corn. The woollen manufacture is in a very thriving state in this town, and there is an extensive pottery, or earthenware manufactory in this place, which branch may be considerably improved and enlarged, as it is the only one in this part of Ireland, and the clay and materials hereabouts (are) of a peculiar quality for the purpose. It possesses also a share of the Newfoundland trade, and several ships load here every spring for the island.* This branch of trade admits of much extension, and no place seems better calculated for the purpose than Youghal, from its happy situation.
The same article mentions Youghal as 'frequented every summer by many of the first families in the kingdom. It may therefore be called,' proceeds the writer, 'with much propriety, the Margate or Brighthelmstone of Ireland.'
*English merchants, chiefly those at Poole, Dorsetshire, who were engaged in the Newfoundland trade, sent their ships to Youghal to victual, and often hired hands here to assist in curing the fish. This created intercourse between this port and the North American colonies, which now rarely take place. The Newfoundland ships ceased to call here about 1810.' - (The Hand-Book For Youghal, W.G. Field, 1896)
(HC 17/10/1791) – The brig Margaret, Capt. Griffith, arrived on Thursday evening last, at Youghal, from London. On the passage one of the hands a young man named Thomas John, was unfortunately washed over board and drowned.
(HC 18/7/1791) - Committed To the County Gaol …By the Mayor of Youghal, Anstice Barry, charged with feloniously stealing out of the breeches-pocket of Robert Whoulton, mariner, an half guinea and 6s 6d.
1793 - 8 Jan. A numerous and respectable meeting of the inhabitants of the town of Youghal and Barony of Imokilly, convened by public advertisements by the Mayor, Walter Atkin Hayman Esq., was this day held in the New Rooms (Mall House). An Association, similar to that of the Crown and Anchor Tavern in London, to be called 'The Youghal and Barony of Imokilly Association,' was formed, for the purpose of discouraging and suppressing all seditious publications and for promoting loyalty and obedience to the constituted authorities. - 6 Feb. A meeting at Youghal to demand Emancipation and Reform, was advertised anonymously in the Cork Evening Post, but was checked by a proclamation, issued this day by the Mayor and Bailiffs, and countersigned by the principal inhabitants. John Hall Esq., Secretary of (Lodge 900) the Youghal Orangemen presented an Address to the Mayor, thanking him for his hereditary loyalty. - 1793 - The South Cork Militia were raised in Doneraile, and marched to Youghal, where they were armed and accoutred. On the next day they proceeded, by government order, to impress men for the navy. Being nearly 800 strong, they formed a press-gang of the most formidable description, and made a sweeping seizure. Besides seamen, fishermen, and idlers, they carried off schoolmasters, joiner, weavers, tailors and a motley and incongruous crew, who were sent off immediately by tender to Cove, and were entered in His Majesty's ships. - 1793 - There was much sickness and mortality at Youghal. - (The Hand-Book For Youghal, W.G. Field, 1896)
1795 - 29 Sept. A bye-law passed the Corporation, repealing al, previous enactments against the admission of Roman Catholics to the freedom of trade; and several persons professing that faith were admitted accordingly. - (The Hand-Book For Youghal, W.G. Field, 1896)
1796 - The old Roman Catholic Chapel, situated outside the town-walls near the North Abbey, ** was deserted this year, in consequence of the erection of the present place of Worship in Bow Street. It was a low, plain, structure of no considerable size, shapen like ┘, the upper limb being north and the lower west. Both transepts were occupied with galleries; the northern was used by women only, and the western by men. A few years before the Chapel was taken down, one of the galleries fell and injured several persons. The foundations were removed in the autumn of 1851, in order to make ground for graves.
** Lord, writing in 1784, thus describes (p.33) the Old Chapel, and shows the need which existed for the New Edifice: 'There is also a Roman Chapel here, outside of the town. It is but a poor building, not near large enough for the number that attend it. The lower part and galleries are greatly encroached upon by several pews; this appears to be a great inconvenience, as the Chapel is but small and the congregation large. In each of these pews, there is sufficient room for eight or ten persons with ease. They are mostly occupied by three or four persons during prayers, when many decent persons are obliged (for want of room) to stay outside. This particularly in wet or cold weather, is very distressing. It is to be wished the inhabitants of the Roman Religion (in circumstances) would subscribe to build a new one. In towns of much less consequence than Youghall, their places of worship make a handsome appearance.' The burial ground of the North Abbey is till popularly called The Mass-Yard. - (The Hand-Book For Youghal, W.G. Field, 1896)

PIGOT’S DIRECTORY 1824 – YOUGHAL - IN the county of Cork, is situated on an arm of the sea, 124 miles south east of Dublin, and on the mail road between Waterford and Cork. It is situated at the base of a lofty hill, near the head of the bay, on the south side of the Blackwater river. It is governed by a mayor and other municipal officers, and returns one member to the Imperial Parliament. Youghal has a safe and commodious harbour, in which vessels, protected from all winds, can ride in twenty-four feet water, at the lowest ebb. There are several good quays and piers, which materially facilitate the landing and shipping of merchandise. The town consists principally of one street, nearly a mile in length, which is divided into two parts, and denominated North and South Main-street; this separation is made by a lofty square building, called the Clock-gate, from its containing the town clock, surmounted by a cupola, with a gift ball and vane; it appears, from the inscription on the south side, to have been built in 1777. Over the arch, which crosses the street, is the town prison, with the gaoler’s rooms, &c. Youghal was incorporated by King Edward IV and invested with important privileges, which were confirmed and augmented by succeeding monarchs. In the reign of Elizabeth it held out against the Desmond rebellion, in favour of the Crown, and though obliged to submit to Cromwell, for want of succour, yet in the year 1648, the corporation were among the first to proclaim Charles II King of Great Britain and Ireland. In North Main-street are the remains of a Castle. Youghal consists but of one parish, the rector of which is the Bishop of Cloyne. The church is a very ancient Gothic structure; its nave is 132 feet long and 66 broad, and the square tower is 32 feet high. There is also a chapel of ease recently erected, and situated on the site of the cemetery of an abbey fro Franciscans, which was founded by Maurice Fitzgerald, Lord Justice of Ireland, in the year 1224. The Catholics and Presbyterians have each a chapel, the Methodists two, and the Quakers, a meeting-house. The free school was founded by the first Earl of Cork, and an almshouse for six widows provides each of them with lodgings, firing, and five pounds per annum. Here are also an infirmary and dispensary, a commodious fish market, situate on one of the quays, and a market for butter. The principal trade of the town is in corn, large quantities of which are exported; there is also considerable business done in provisions, and the place has a share in the Greenland trade. The woollen manufacture, which formerly flourished here, has entirely ceased, though there is still some business done in wool-combing. Two manufactories of brown stone pottery are in a flourishing condition. It is generally supposed that the potato, now so valuable an esculent, was first introduced from America by Sir Walter Raleigh into Ireland, and planted in the gardens of Youghal, which is not improbable, since this was part of his estate, which he sold to the Earl of Cork. The market days are Wednesday and Saturday. Fairs are held on the 27th of May and the 18th of October.POST OFFICE – South Main-street – Post Master, Mr. Richard Taylor. The Dublin, Waterford, and English letters are despatched every morning at nine, and the Cork and southern letters every evening at five. The letter box is closed half an hour previous to despatch.
