(CJ 4/3/1756) – To be Sold by JAMES RONAYNE, of Killworth. One Hundred Hogshead of different kinds of CYDER Of last Year, and this Years Making, out of the best Orchards near the Black-Water.

(CJ 12/6/1760) - WILLIAM GILLAND HAS taken the Red Lyon Inn, in Killworth, lately held by Mr. James Ronayne, where he is supplied with a great quantity of the best wines of all kinds, and all other liquors, as also warm stabling, good bedding, and waste grass, therefore prays the encouragement of his friends, which he hopes to merit by the greatest care of his house and stables.

(CJ 22/10/1761) – JAMES RONAYNE, HAS opened the NEW INN at Ardfinan, and has fitted up the house in the neatest manner for the reception of Ladies, Gentlemen and others; they may depend on the best and cheapest accommodation, as he is determined to exert himself in giving the utmost content to all that please to favour him with their custom. He takes the opportunity of returning thanks to all his former customers that may use of his house in Kilworth, and request the favour of their continuance at Ardfinan, as he has choice hay and oats, warm stabling, a good coach house, and the best of liquors.

N.B. To be let from the 25th of March next, the lands of Lower Downin, with the orchards there in full bearing, which makes frequent a hundred hogsheads of choice Cyder; there is 25 years to run of the lease; said land is within 1 mile of Kilworth, 2 of Fermoy, 3 of Mitchelstown, and 14 of Corke, with a good farm house, cyder house, and cellar. Proposals to be received by Mr. Thomas Andrews in Kilworth, or by James Ronayane at Ardfinan, or by his son Garret Ronayne in Maning, who will shew the land and orchards.

(CJ 13/6/1763) -ON Thursday the 2d of this instant June, was dropt in the streets of Kilworth, or on the road from Kilworth to Glanduff, a silver watch, with a steel chain and small steel seal, and the maker's name John Davise, on the dial plate. Whoever brings said watch to MR. FLORENCE M'CARTHY at Curraghvone near Glanduff, will be paid a guinea reward. It is expected that if the said watch is discovered or exposed to sale, it will be stopped for the owner.

(CC 30/6/1766) –We hear from Kilworth that one Roach,a native of that Town, lately read his recantation from the Errors of the Church of Rome, before a large concourse of people, to whom he declared the pleasure he found in quitting the Erroneous and Superstitious practices used in that Church; and in which he had too long [been?] (as he was then thoroughly convinced.)

PIGOT’S DIRECTORY 1824 - KILWORTH -SITUATED at the foot of a ridge of a mountains, is a small town in the county of Cork, distant one hundred and eight miles SSW of Dublin, twenty north-by-east of Cork, twenty-six north-west of Youghal, and six south-east of Mitchelstown. It contains one church, an ancient structure, with a tower built about the year 1742; a Catholic chapel lately erected at a short distance from the town, and capable of containing a thousand individuals; a parish school for the education of an unlimited number of children, which was endowed by the late Colvill Moore, Esq.; and a ladies’society for the relief of the indigent in the vicinity, under the patronage of Lady Mount-Cashel, whose exertions in behalf of the poor of every denomination are unremitting. Contiguous to the town, mills for dressing flax have recently been erected by the Earl of Mount-Cashel. This establishment is a source of infinite benefit to the labouring classes, to whom flax is distributed for the purpose of manufacture so judiciously, as to provide many families with constant employment, which is a means of promoting a spirit of industry among the children, and of enabling parents to provide for the comfortable maintenance and education of their offspring. Adjacent to the town is Moor Park, the residence of the noble Earl above-named, adjoining whose improvements is the castle of Cloughleagh, boldly situated on the banks of the river Funcheon, which gently meanders through the demesne, presenting various delightful prospects. This castle formerly withstood several sieges. In this town are held six annual fairs, viz : on the 25th of January, on Easter Tuesday, the first Thursday after Trinity Sunday, the 11th of September, the 21st of November, and the 10th of December. There is a market here every Friday, but from its contiguity to the more plentiful supplies at the Fermoy market, little business is done.

POST OFFICE - Post Master, Mr. Wm. Simmons. The mail for Dublin, &c, by Clonmel is despatched at half past eleven in the morning, and arrives at two in the afternoon. The mail for Cork, &c, is despatched every day at two in the afternoon, and arrives at half-past eleven in the morning

COACHES - The Dublin Mail Coach passes daily to Cork at two in the afternoon, and returns at half-past eleven in the morning.

KILWORTH - Lewis’ Topographical Dictionary 1837 - KILWORTH, a market and post-town, and a parish, in the barony of CONDONS and CLONGIBBONS, county of CORK, and province of MUNSTER 20 miles (N. N.E.) from Cork, and i06 (SW) from Dublin, on the mail coach road from Cork to Dublin; containing 3038 inhabitants, of which number, 1963 are in the town. This place was the scene of some battles in the war of 1641 and during the usurpation of Cromwell, by whom the manor was given to Fleetwood, whose name it still bears. In July 1642, the castle of Cloghlea, on the banks of the river Funcheon, near the town, said to have been built by the family of the Condons, and at that time the property of Sir Richard Fleetwood, was taken by Lord Barrymore and the custody of it entrusted to Sir Arthur Hyde, from whom it was afterwards taken by a descendant of the original founder, who surprised the garrison and either put them to death or detained them prisoners. The town is situated on the river Funcheon, over which is a neat stone bridge of six arches, about a mile above its confluence with the Blackwater: it consists principally of one long irregular Street, containing 343 houses, of which several are well built and of handsome appearance, and is sheltered by a low mountain ridge, which rises immediately behind it, There are several mills on the river, the principal of which are the Maryville flour-mills, the property of Laurence Corban, Esq., generally employing from 20 to 30 men, and producing annually about 12,000 barrels of flour; there is also a flax-mill belonging to Dr. Collet, and adjoining the town is a mill for oatmeal. The market is on Friday, but since the rise of the town of Fermoy, only 2 miles distant, it has been gradually declining; the fairs are on Jan. 25th, Easter-Tuesday, Corpus Christi day, Sept. 11th, Nov. 21st, and Dec. 10th. The market-house is a neat building near the church; there is a constabulary police station, and a manorial court is held every three weeks for the recovery of debts under 40s, late currency with jurisdiction over this parish and parts of the parishes of Kilcrumper and Macrony.

The parish comprises 6521 statute acres, as applotted under the tithe act, and valued at £2973 per ann.; the soil is good; about one half of the land is under tillage and the remainder in pasture; the system of agriculture has been much improved and is still advancing; and there is little waste land except reclaimable mountain. There is no bog; consequently fuel is scarce. Limestone of good quality abounds, and is quarried chiefly for agticultural purposes. Moore Park, the seat of the Earl of Mountcashel, is a noble and spacious mansion, situated on the right bank of the Funcheon, which flows through a richly wooded demesne of 800 acres, comprehending much beautiful and interesting scenery. Within the grounds is Cloghlea castle, a lofty square tower rounded the angles, and situated on the highest ground on the bank of the river commanding one of its most important passes. The other seats are Maryville, the residence of L. Corban, Esq., a handsome mansion of recent erection and finely situated on the Funcheon; Woodviev neat modern residence of Lieut. F. Prangnall, R. N.; and Rushmount: of D. Geran, Esq. The living is a vicarage, in the diocese of Cloyne episcopally united to the vicarages of Kilcrumper, Macrony, and Leitrim, by act of council, in 1692 together constituting the union of Kilworth, in the patronage of the Bishop; the rectory is impropriate in W. Charters, Esq. The tithes amount to £340, one-half payable to the impropriator and the other to the vicar; the vicarial tithes of the union amount to £850. The glebe-house, situated in the parish of Kilcrumper, was erected by the present incumbent, assisted by a gift of £100 and a loan of £1300 from the late Board of First Fruits, in 1820; attached to it are 34 acres of glebe, and there are 10 more acres in the union. The church, an old structure, has lately been thoroughly repaired by a grant of £371 from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. In the R. C. divisions the parish is the head of a union or district, which, with the exception of part of the parish of Kilcrumper, attached to the district of Fermoy, is co-extensive with that of the Established Church; the parochial chapel at Kilworth is a neat and spacious edifice; and there is a chapel at Coolmahon, in the parish of Macrony. The parochial school is supported by the interest of a bequest of £500 by the Rev. Dr. Moore, a late incumbent, and an annual donation from the vicar: the school house, which is a neat building, has 2 acres of land rent-free attached to it. Another school is chiefly supported by Lady Mountcashel, who also patronises a Sunday School; and a large national school-house was erected in the R. C. chapel-yard in 1833. There are also four private schools in the parish in which and in the public schools are about 220 children. A dispensary and a temporary fever hospital have been opened for the poor. The only relic of antiquity is the lofty tower of Cloghlea castle, already noticed. In that part of the demesne of Moore Park called the Castle field, numerous copper and silver coins, and some human skeletons, have been found. There are several ancient raths, under some of which appear to be chambers or subterraneous apartments. Kilworth gives the inferior title of Baron to the family of Moore, Earls of Mountcashel.

LEITRIM - Lewis’ Topographical Dictionary 1837 - LEITRIM, a parish, partly in the barony of Coshmore and Coshbride county of Waterford, but chiefly in that of Condons and Clongibbons, county of Cork, and province of Munster, 4 miles (E.) from Kilworth, on the north side of the river Blackwater, and on the road from Fermoy to Lismore; containing 2032 inhabitants. It comprises 6597 statute acres, as applotted under the tithe act, and valued at £3826. 7 10. per annum. Of the land which is of variable quality, that portion situated on the banks of the river is the best: limestone, brownstone, and slate are found in this parish, of which the former is quarried for agricultural purposes, but the latter two are not worked. The only seat is Kilmurry, the residence of Thos. St. John Grant Esq., beautifully situated in the midst of some extensive improvements at the junction of the two counties, which are here separated only by a small glen stream and a mountain path. It is in the diocese of Cloyne: the rectory is impropriate in Wm. Norcott, Esq., and the vicarage forms part of the union of Kilworth. The tithes amount to £460, payable in equal portions to the impropriator and the vicar. In the R. C divisions it also forms part of the union or district of Kilworth. About 80 children are educated in two private schools. In the demesne of Kilmurry was discovered, some years since, a number of human skeletons, which, combined with the word Kil has led to the inference that a church or cell to some religious house formerly existed here.

MACRONY - Lewis’ Topographical Dictionary 1837 - MACRONY a parish, in the barony of CONDONS and CLONGIBBONS, county of CORK, and province of MUNSTER, 2 miles (N. N.E.) from Kilworth, on the road to Lismore; containing 2766 inhabitants. It comprises 8109 statute acres, as applotted under the tithe act, and valued at £3509 per ann.; the land, though in general of an inferior quality, is chiefly under tillage, a large portion of the mountain waste having been lately brought into cultivation; there is a small portion of bog. Limestone raised in the adjoining parish is generally burnt for manure, and slate was formefly worked in the vicinity. The river Araglyn, which separates this parish from Leitrim, winds through a vale covered on both sides with a dense wood of oak, chiefly planted by W. C. Collis, Esq. At the head of the vale, at a place called the Furnace, iron ore was formerly worked to a great extent and smelted on the spot, but the timber becoming too valuable for fuel, the works were discontinued about 70 years since. There are two small corn-mills on the river employed in grinding oats. Near the Furnace, where the counties of Cork, Tipperary, and Waterford meet, is a station of the constabulary police, supported at the joint expense of the three counties. Castle Cooke, the seat of W Cooke Collis, Esq., is beautifully situated on the Araglyn, in the midst of his extensive and valuable plantations. The parish is in the diocese of Cloyne; the rectory is irnpropriate in the representative of Messrs. E. & B. Norcott, and the vicarage forms part of the union of Kilworth; the tithes amount to £460, payable in equal portions to the impropriator and the vicar. In the R. C. divisions also it is part of the union of Kilworth, and has a chapel, a small plain building, at Coolmahon. About 50 children are educated during summer in a private school.

SLATER’S 1846 DIRECTORY - KILWORTH -A SMALL market town, in the parish of its names, barony of Condons and Clongibbons, county of Cork, is 133 miles SW from Dublin, 25 NNE from Cork, and between three and four miles N from Fermoy; pleasantly situated on the river Funcheon, over which is a neat stone bridge of six arches, about a mile above its confluence with the Blackwater. Mills for dressing flax were some years since, erected by the Earl of Mountcashel for the advantage of the industrious poor; they are now converted, or about to be, into grist or flour mills. Moor Park, the seat of the nobleman just mentioned, is a beautiful and well-wooded demesne, on the right bank of the river; the mansion, which commands some delightful scenery, is a noble and spacious building. Castle Cloughleagh, also seated on the banks of the Funcheon, affords some fine prospects from its lofty tower. In the turbulent periods with which this kingdom was inflicted, it withstood the assaults of Cromwell, to whom it subsequently surrendered. The market-house and manor court-house of Fleetwood are situated in the centre of the town. Petty Sessions are held, once a fortnight, for the recovery of wages and settling petty feuds; William Page, Esq., is the seneschal. The Crown Inn here is a very admirably conducted house. The nursery-grounds of Messrs. Armor & Sons are extensive, delightfully laid out, and abound with the choicest floral and horticultural productions.

The parish church of Kilworth union is an ancient structure, with a tower, the latter raised in 1742. The Roman Catholic chapel, situated a short distance from the town, is a spacious and convenient edifice. A national school, near the chapel, a parochial school (within the parish) supported by a bequest of the late Hon. And Rev. Robert Moore, and the present incumbent, the Rev. Thomas Newenham, afford gratuitous instruction to numerous children. The market (of little note) is held on Friday. Fairs January 25th, Tuesday in Easter week, September 11th, November 21st, and December 10th, principally for cattle. Population of the parish, according to the returns made in 1841, 3,246, and of the town, 1,772 of that number.

(CE 25/9/1846) - FURTHER FOOD OUTRAGES …It was rumoured on this morning that Moore Park, the residence of Lord Mountcashel, has been attacked on yesterday and a quantity of Indian corn, stored in an out house for the use of the tenantry, abstracted. On inquiry, however, it has been ascertained that no such outrage was committed, nor was there any attempt to warrant even the rumour.

(CE 2/10/1846) - APPALLING DISTRESS -We pray attention to the statement of the Rev. Mr. Daly contained in this day's paper, with reference to the destitution of the parish of Kilworth, of which he is the pastor. Many of the poor inhabitants, he declared, at the Fermoy Presentment Sessions, had no other means of subsistence but cabbage leaves, the effects of eating which were visible in their altered frames and appearance. The Earl of MOUNTCASHEL, without repeating the shocking details, testified to the truth of every word of the Clergyman's recital. It is strange that a state of circumstances, so undoubtedly real and sickening to contemplate, should occur in a Christian land.

Several Proprietors and Farmers in general, have not contributed to the Relief Fund. It is hoped all those and other kindly disposed persons will aid the collection now being made, to procure necessary clothing for the numbers of miserable people in this extensive district, and if possible, to redeem from pawn the most needful articles which actual necessity forced them to pledge. - WM. NORCOTT,Secretary to the Committee, - Kilworth, April 25, 1847

(CE 2/7/1847) - ARSON - On the night of the 29th ult., a dwelling-house of Maurice O Leary, a farmer, living at Downing, within a few miles of Kilworth, was set on fire by an armed party, and entirely consumed. Information of the outrage having been communicated to the Kilworth Station, Constable Ml. Daniels and a party quickly arrived on the spot - and after a diligent search through the neighbourhood, succeeded in arresting four persons, who were brought next day before Lord Mountcashel, and remanded for further investigation to the Fermoy Petty Sessions on Monday next. The motive of the outrage was to get possession of the house.

(CE 5/4/1848) - CORK SPRING ASSIZES - ARSON - THOMAS CURTIN was charged with having feloniously set fire to the house of WM. O LEARY on the 28th of June 1847, at Downing, in this county. - PATRICK SHEEHAN sworn and examined by MR. COPINGER, Q.C., --Saw THOMAS CURTIN on the 9th of June in Fermoy; prisoner asked witness could he get eight or nine good men for him; witness said he could if he paid them well; witness asked what it was about, and prisoner replied that it was nothing of any consequence; then they went out, and witness asked prisoner was he not going to get the men; prisoner replied that witness would do; witness and another man named BLAKEthen went with prisoner to Glanworth; prisoner had a gun with him; they met some other men at Glanworth, and after drinking in a public house there they went to Downing; at this time they numbered about twenty; prisoner then got some fire in a pot and they went to O LEARY's house, where prisoner put a ladder to the side of the house, and put the fire into the thatch; this was about one o'clock at night; CURTIN blew the thatch until it was blazed; they then set fire to the other side of the house; O LEARY and some men came out of the house; a fight took place, and prisoners brother and another man of his party were wounded. This witness was cross-examined at some length by Mr. O HEA. - JOHN BLAKE was sworn and made a statement similar in effect to that of the last witness. - WILLIAM LEARY examined by Mr. BENNETT, Q.C., --Purchased some land from the prisoner; after he purchased it, witness told him that fever was in his father's house, and that he was going to America, and would feel obliged by letting him remain in the house, which, with the land, witness had purchased from him; witness received them into his house but prisoner's wife took fever and he was obliged to turn her out; witness described the attack made on his house on the night of the 20th; fired three or four shots on the prisoner and his party; the house was all burned to ashes, and the furniture in it; witness and his men got out safely; did not follow the other men; heard CURTIN's voice and knew him by it. - Cross-examined by Mr. O HEA--Has a presentment at the Assizes for £100 for malicious burnings; £34 of that were for the furniture which witness supposes was burned; would not be very much surprised if one of his witnesses should swear that there was no shots fired on the night in question, but if anyone did swear that it would be false; would be rather astonished if any one said he had burned the house himself (laughter). - EDMUND BERMINGHAM examined by Mr. COPINGER, Q.C.--Was in the employment of O LEARY with eight other men, on the night his house was burned; was up at the time; saw seven or eight men come up to the house. Witness then described the attack on the house. - To Mr. O HEA--Did not hear any shot fired by the party outside, but shots were fired from the inside. - Constable THOMAS JUDGE deposed that shortly after six o'clock on the morning after the burning of the house he saw prisoner, with his father, his wife, and his sister in Fermoy; arrested JOHN CURTIN that morning; examined him and saw a wound in his breast; saw witness PATRICK SHEEHAN with prisoner on the same morning; pursued him across the bridge but lost sight of him. - Some other important witnesses having been examined, the case for the Crown closed. Mr. O HEA addressed the jury for the defence. His Lordship summed up the evidence. The jury retired to consult........The jury then returned into Court, and gave a verdict of not guilty for the prisoner, THOMAS CURTIN. (Transcribed by Anita Sheahan Coraluzzi)
