KILMICHAEL - Lewis’ Topographical Dictionary 1837 with notes - KILMICHAEL, a parish, partly in the Western Divisions of the Barony of EAST CARBERY, but chiefly in the barony of WEST MUSKERRY, county of Cork, and province of MUNSTER, 6 milies, (S.S.W.) from Macroom, on the road to Dunmanway; containing 6166 inhabitants. It comprises 20,835 statute acres, as apploted under the tithe act, and valued at £9463 per annum; of these, about half is good pasture, one third arable, and the remainder bog and mountain. The substratum is slaty, containing indications of copper, particularly in the bed of the river Lee, which seperates this parish from Kinneigh. Here is a constabulary police station [at Terelton]. The principal seats are Cooldaniel, that of J. Barter, Esq.; Carrigbuoy, of E. Barrett, Esq.; and Greenville, of B. Swete, Esq., in whose demesne are some lakes with great numbers of swans and waterfowl; also an ancient rath, now planted, in which bags of copper coins, and several apartments, communicating by narrow passages, have been discovered. The house was attacked in 1822 by the Whiteboys, who were repulsed, and several of them killed. [The Whiteboys were led by a man named Cotter. Four of those captured were later hung at Deshure on the 1st of March, 1822. These were Richard Drummy, Daniel Cronin, Timothy Hallahan and Denis Murphy. Also hung at the same time, was Edward Brien who had taken part in the ‘Battle of Keimaneigh.’]

The living is a rectory and vicarage, in the diocese of Cork, episcopally united, in 1797, to part of the rectory and vicarage of Macloneigh, and in the patronage of the Bishop: the tithes amount to £692.6.2, and of the entire benefice to £942.6.2 There is no glebe-house; the glebe comprises 7a. 1r. 18p. The church is a small ancient building. [Kilmichael Church of Ireland parish register has not survived.Glebe House at Farranavarrigane, Church in Moneycusker (now closed). Rev. Henry McClintock was the Rector from 1846 replacing Rev. Richard J Rothe who was the Rector in 1837. Rev. McClintock was active, along with Fr. James O Driscoll, in Famine Relief. Other Rectors of Kilmichael and Macloneigh:- Rev. Edward Kenny took the 1766 Census, John Henry Madras was Curate from 1797-98, Robert Warren was the incumbent in 1830, Robert Warren Jun. was his Curate.]

In the R. C. divisions the parish is the head of a union or district, comprising also Macloneigh, Kilmurry, and Dunisky, and containing three chapels, two in Kilmichael, [Parish register from 1819. St. Michael’s, Cooldorrihy (R.C. church on this site since 1791), St. Enda’s, Johnstown] and one in Macloneigh [St. Finnbarr’s, Toames West, 1831, main parish church. The parochial schools, in which about 20 children are educated, is aided by a donation of £12. per ann. from the rector; and there are four private schools, in which about 140 children are educated. [In the 1820s, there were eight schools. These included the Hedge Schools at Cooldouhy (Cooldorrihy), Gortacurrig, Kilnadur, Gurteen, and Clashbredane, and schools for Protestant children at Macloneigh and Moneycusker. In 1837, Kilmichael had five schools--a Biblical School at Moneycusker, and four Hedge Schools. In 1845, there were 3 schools in Macloneigh and five in Kilmichael. MACLONEIGH - Lewis' Topographical Dictionary 1837 - MACLONEIGH, a parish, in the barony of WEST MUSKERRY, county of CORK, and province of MUNSTER, 2 miles (S.) from Macroom; containing 1520 inhabitants. It isbounded on the north by the river Lee, and comprises 3826 statute acres, as apploted under the tithe act, and valued at £2876 per ann.: in som places the soil is deep and loamy, in others inclined to stiff clay, and in others light and friable; about two-thirds of the land are under tillage, and the reaminder consists of rough mountain pasture and bog, of which latter there is a considerable portion near the river; agriculture is in a very backward state, the old heavy wooden plough being still used, and much of the land is cultivated with the spade. The seats are Castleview, the residence of P. Ronayne, Esq.; and the glebe-house, of the Rev. R. J. Roothe. It is a rectory, in the diocese of Cork, forming part of the union of Kilmichael: the tithes amount to £250. The glebe-house, a neat mansion is in Kilmichael. In the R. C. divisions also it is part of the union or district of Kilmichael: the chapel at Tomes is a small neat edifice, erected in 1831. The parochial school is supported by the rector; another school is aided by a bequest of £10 per ann. from the late Mrs. Margaret Brown, of Castleview; and there is a national school at Toames, for which a school-house was built in 1833, at an expense of £90. In these schools collectively about 190 children are educated. The ruins of the old church are situated near the glebe-house; it was a spacious ediface, nearly 80 feet long, of which the gables and south walls are still nearly entire; the doors and windows are of hewn stone, but of rude construction.

Kilmichael, February 18th, 1845 - MY DEAR SIR - I have much pleasure in transmitting herewith the sum of £20, contributed in this Parish towards the O CONNELL fund, and I abjoin a list of the principal contributers, to which you will have the goodness to give early publication. The list, as you will perceive, contains the name of Counsellor O SULLIVAN and the MESSRS. BARRETT, who have been uniformedly found ready to respond to the call made on behalf of the Liberator in this locality, and whose example and station in our local community, have not failed to give an impulse to the Collection. It is but justice also, to the other contributers, to state, that on the annual announcement, they have never been found wanting to uphold it by their generous contributions, thus demonstrating their attachment to the illustrious Champion of Civil and Religious Liberty, and their recognition of his claims to the gratitude of his Country. I would have remitted the sum much earlier, but that I was anxious by the delay to increase its amount. - I remain, my dear Sir, Sincerely yours, - JAMES O DRISCOLL

(CE 19/12/1845) - MACROOM PETTY SESSIONS - Archibald M’Kenzie and John Connell were charged with riot and unlawful assemblage at Coolderrihy on the ….. of September. Both prisoners pleaded guilty. - Mr. B. Gallwey, (Crown Solicitor), said he would enter into a few particulars, to show the seriousness of the offence with which the prisoners stood charged. This was a prosecution that resulted out of a very serious riot which occurred at Coolderrihy, in which upwards of four hundred persons were engaged; the prisoners were present, one of whom (M’Kenzie) took a very active part, seizing one of the police man’s muskets and attempting to wrest it from him, and several policemen were severely injured on the occasion. - Constable Parr examined by Mr. Gallwey - Deposed that he was present at Coolderrihy on the day on whichg the riot occurred; had a prisoner in custody, and was conveying him away when M’Kenzie rushed forward and desired the constable to let go the man; saw him take an active part in the riot generally; about four hundred persons were engaged in the riot; the Rev. James O Driscoll was present; his horse was struck in the eye, which was knocked out; the priest was busily engaged in quelling the disturbance. - Sub-Inspector Gernon examined by Mr. Gallwey - Was at the pattern at Coolderrihy on that day with a party of 30 men; Mr. O Driscoll arrived at the time rioting was proceeding; he exerted himself in the most strenuous manner to induce the people to go home; requested me not to allow my men to load, and he would get the people to disperse; he came back shortly afterwards and told me that his horse had been struck in the eye; no man could have made more active exertions to force the people to go home; understood him to be curate to the parish priest and known to the people; it was the greatest scene of confusion that he ever witnessed. - Mr. Little remarked it certainly was a most disgraceful outrage, and but for the judicious conduct of the officer in command, and the praiseworthy exertions of the Rev. Mr. ODriscoll, most diastrous consequences might have ensued. - The Court agreed with Mr.Little, and thought great praise was due to those gentlemen in so effectually preventing a most serious breach of the peace. - The prisoners were respectively sentenced to 4 months’ imprisonment.

(CE 7/10/1846) A BENEVOLENT LANDLORD -  Ballyvirane, Macroom, 22 September, 1846 - SIR - After trespassing so recently on the columns of your highly respectable journal, I feel a great difficulty in again claiming a corner of its valuable space, indeed, I should be at any time diffident to obtrude my very humble name on the public, but I hope a good man’s praise will ever be acceptable to you as to the people, particularly in these times when men’s souls are tried, and when acts of sterling worth only should be lauded and held up by the enlightened and independent press of the country. - On yesterday, the tenantry of Mr. Swete, of Greenville, attended at Knockanirk to see the foundation of a new mill laid for their use by their future landlord, Master Swete. It was indeed delightful to witness the thousands of happy countenances congregated together from his very extensive possessions - the young, the old, the rich, the poor, all mingled together in joyous exultation, shouting the praise of their benevolent landlord, who forgave them the rent, and was at that moment providing for their future comfort. - Mr. Swete, certain that he is not of a doubtful aristocracy, mingled with the happy multitude, so did his amiable lady and her beautiful children, and his sister, Mrs. Townsend. - It was delighteful to witness the effusion of Irish gratitude on this occasion, when Master Swete laid the foundation stone, which he did with a silver trowel; he was taken up in their arms and borne from one to the other among them with shouts of joy and thousands of blessings on his head; sometimes you would be apprehensive for his safety in the crowd, but Mr. Swete feared not for he knew he was in the midst of a thousand hearts that would shed their blood in his defence if necessary. - Mr. Swete’s father enjoyed power and station in the country, and he is certain to transmit power and distinction to his children, for the people are determined to adhere to his good and distinguished race with even more than feudal fidelity. - This cheering spectacle, in which the reality far exceeded many fabled ….. of sylvan happiness, presented so striking a contrast to the all absorbing gloom and apprehension prevailing around, I could not resisit the temptation of attempting to paint the Oasis in the Desert. - I remain Sir, your grateful servant, - CORNELIUS MURPHY - (The above letter was mislaid for a few days, else it would have appeared sooner.)

SPLAINE ESTATE, COOLDORRIHY, KILMICHAEL 1847 -(CE16/7/1847) A GOOD LANDLORD - Cooldaniel near Macroom, July 13, 1847 - SIR - You will confer a vast obligation on me by giving place in the next number of your Journal, to this brief but grateful recognition of mine of the considerate kindness of my Landlord, James Splaine, Esq., of Gurrane, in this county, who, on his estate on the lands of Cooldrihy, has forgiven all the tenants 25 per cent of last September gale, which he did not demand till this week. There is also a running gale which Mr. Splaine says he will not require as long as the tenantry will pursue the same industrial course they have hitherto adopted. Such conduct is a palpable and practical introduction of the tenant right now so extremely agitating the public mind, and calculated, to a certain extent, to afford the agricultural classes a moral certainty of conpensation for their incessant labours in the development of the resources of the land. - I am Sir, with profound respect, truly yours, - JOHN HALLAHAN

(CE 14/5/1878) - ATHLETIC SPORTS - AGLISH V. KILMICHAEL - IN reference to the Football Match, played in the Cork park, on Sunday 28th ultimo, between the above parishes, we, as managers acting for the Kilmichael men on the occasion, take this opportunity of placing on public record the following facts in connection therewith, viz.: - That the Aglish men notably violated the conditions arranged previous to the play, and refused to abide by the decision of Mr. Walsh the Referee appointed by Mr. Murphy, Garryhesta, acting for them. That we, therefore, claim the victory and the wager (which, with our men, is an item of minor importance), having strictly compiled with the conditions mutually agreed upon prior to the play, and having been refused our turn at the expiration of the first twenty minutes, the whole time being limited to forty.

We have necessitated to make these public statements, having failed to obtain a response from Mr. Murphy to a communication addressed by us to him on the 2nd Inst, demanding the wager played for. - DANIEL O KEEFE, JAMES O KEEFE, Toames, Macroom, May 13th, 1878
