(CC 30/1/1766) –Last Friday se’nnight the Bute Indiaman, Capt. Maitland, lately arrived at Crookhaven from the East Indies, sailed for England.

(HC 29/12/1794) - CORK - On Saturday 29th Inst., the brig Lady Harriett, laden with fruit from Cadiz, bound to Dublin, anchored at Long Island Channel, near Crookhaven, put in there by contrary wind, to the disgrace of the country, and in violation of the sacred principles of justice and hospitality, the cargo was plundered and carried off by a mob of people who boarded her by force, and the vessel nearly destroyed; not an atom was left aloft, all cut away with hatchets brought for that purpose, and but a part of the hull preserved. Unluckily Mr. Richard Edward Hull and his brother, were from home at the time, otherwise by their activity, it is certain this violent outrage would have been prevented; they arrived at the spot in time only to save part of the shell of the vessel. Surely this affair loudly calls for the interference of our Government, and every man ought, for the good of society, assist in discovery of the authors or abettors of this nefarious act.

(HC 29/12/1794) – WRECKED GOODS - To be sold by Auction, for ready Money, on Monday the 5th day of January, 1795, at Crookhaven, by Richard Wright, Esq; Collector of the Port of Baltimore, the following Articles, being part of the Cargo of the Brig Eliza, Sweeny Wilson Master, bound from Hamburgh to New York, and Stranded at Crookhaven the 26th November last: - Corderoys, Velverets, Thickset, …, Baffetys, Counterpanes and other Manchester Goods, Woollen Goods, Yarn and Ragging Stuff, Sheeting Linens white and grey, Coarse linen in seven-yard pieces, Waxed painted Linens in nine-yard pieces, English Check in twelve-yard pieces, Stockings; Duck, Canvas. - December 18, 1794.

(CC 23/5/1833) – SHIPWRECK –The brig Mary, from Demerara, bound to Dublin, and laden with a cargo of sugar and coffee, was totally lost on a reef of rocks called the ‘barrels,’ in Crook-haven Bay, on the night of the 1st instant; five of the crew and one passenger, a Mr. Kelly – the son of Mr. Kelly of Upper Dominick street, Dublin, met with a watery grave. Mr. Morris, the master, and four of the crew, succeeded in getting ashore on a small portion of the wreck, and landed, at two o clock in the morning, in a little cove in the bay, after being for a period of four hours up to their necks in the water, and in a most perilous situation, excepting every moment to meet with a fate similar to that of their unfortunate companions, as the sea ran mountains high and the shore presented a horrific appearance. When they reached the shore it was day light, and perceiving a cabin at some distance they made to it, and were admitted, and received such relief as the poor inhabitants could afford – they were not, however, permitted to continue long in their miserable conditions; Mr. Hull, the Lord of the Manor, with that humanity for which he is so justly celebrated, hearing that a part of the crew had been saved, had them conveyed to his own residence, where their wounds (for they were dreadfully bruised,) were dressed, and their wants attended to by Mr. Hull and his amiable lady, who also treated those suffering mariners in the most humane manner during an entire week. Mr. Hull furnished them with clothes, and used every exertion to recover such portions of the property as might be washed a shore, but without effect.

CROOKHAVEN – Lewis’ Topographical Dictionary 1837 – CROOKHAVEN, a village, in the parish of KILMOE, Western Division of the barony of WEST CARBERY, county of CORK, and province of MUNSTER, 19 miles (S.W.) from Skibbereen; containing 424 inhabitants. It is situated upon the harbour of Crookhaven, and consists of a long irregular street, at one end of which stands the parochial church, erected in 1700, at the expense of Dr. Brown, Bishop of Cork, for the accommodation of sailors frequenting the port. It was formerly a place of considerable importance, many foreign vessels having resorted hither for provisions, and during the last war was much frequented by ships of the navy. The harbour being very spacious and well sheltered, renders it a desirable haven, and particularly convenient for vessels bound eastward. A considerable trade is carried on in the exportation of wheat, oats, pork, and butter, and timber and coal are occasionally imported. Here are a constabulary police and a coast-guard station, which latter is one of the nine included in the Skibbereen district. The parochial and Sunday schools are under the superintendence of the rector, and a school is chiefly supported by the Rev. L. O’Sullivan, P. P. Not far from the town are the ruins of Castle Mehan, which was built by the Mehans or O’Heas in 1540.

KILMOE – Lewis’ Topographical Dictionary 1837 – KILMOE, a parish, in the Western division of the barony of WEST CARBERY, county of CORK, and province of MUNSTER; containing, with the village of Rock Island and Crookhaven (both of which are described under their respective heads), 6889 inhabitants. It forms a peninsula on the southern coast, bounded by Dunmanus bay and Crookhaven; and comprises 10,738 statute acres, as applotted under the tithe act. About one-third of the land is under tillage, chiefly by spade-husbandry, and the remainder is bog and mountain land, but the base of the mountains afford good pasturage; the highest mountain is Cahir, near Mizen Head. The scenery is very bold and interest ing: the mountains are of schistose formation, based on argillaceous grit, with veins of quartz intermingled; deposits of copper are found in various places and masses of it are found in the mountain streams, but no mines have been opened: there are several small lakes. On its western and southern boundaries are three remarkable headlands, namely Three Castle Head, Mizen Head, called by Ptolemy Notium or the South Promontory, it being the most south-western land in Ireland, in lat. 51 degrees 26’ 16”, and 1on. 9 degrees 50’; and Brow Head, also said to be the Notium of Ptolemy. Dunmanus bay, which bounds the parish on the north-west, has deep water and good anchorage almost as far up as Mannin island, but is greatly exposed to westerly winds, and is little frequented except by small vessels, which can ride in Dunmanus creek or above Mannin island. Besides this island there are in the bay Owen, Horse, Colt, Lamb, Bird, Furze, and Carbery islands, of which only the last is inhabited. Within the limits of the parish are numerous bays and creeks, the principal of which are Ballydevlin bay, Crookhaven, and Barley cove, in each of which there is good anchorage. Petty sessions are held at Tourmore on alternate Wednesdays, and there is a constabulary police station at Goleen. The principal seats are Rockview, the residence of Florence McCarty; Esq.; Seaview, of D. Coghian, Esq.; Rock Island House, of J. Notter, Esq.; Ballydevlin of L. J. Fleming, Esq.; Crookhaven House, of R. Doe, Esq.; Ballynaule, of J. Baker, Esq.; Goleen House, of J. McCarthy, Esq.; and Tourmore, of R. Bailie, Esq. The living is a rectory and vicarage, in the diocese of Cork, and in the alternate patronage of the Crown and the Bishop: the tithes amount to £500. There is no glebe-house; the glebe comprises 7a. Or. 4p. Here are some extensive tracts of mountain land belonging to the see of Cork, but now in the hands of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. The church is at Crookhaven. In the R. C. divisions the parish forms part of the union or district of West Skull, and has a chapel at Goleen, which was built in 1806. There are five public schools, in which about 400 children are educated, and about 200 are taught in five private schools; there are also three Sunday schools, but most of them are closed during the winter. The three castles which give name for a lofty promontory are detached buildings, within a gun-shot of each other: they are on the cliff and near a spacious and very clear lake, and are stated to have been built by the Mahonys in the 15th century; At Ballydevlin is a castle, called Desmond castle, which was built in 1495 by the Mahonys. Some remains of ancient castles also exist at Lisgriffin and on the shore of the lake of Dunkelly; and near the head of Barley cove are the ruins of the old parochial church.

Lewis’ Topographical Dictionary 1837 – ROCK ISLAND, a village, in the parish of KILMOE, Western Division of the barony of WEST CARBERY, county of CORK, and province of MUNSTER, 19 miles (S.W.) from Skibbereen: the population is returned with the parish. It is advantageously situated on a peninsulated rock opposite Crookhaven, on the south-western coast, and has risen into a flourishing state through the spirited exertions of its proprietor, R. Notter, Esq. A new line of road has been recently opened between this place and Skibbereen, and the post-office has been removed hither from Crookhaven: there is a mail to Skibbereen every second day. Immediately off the village, which contains some well-built houses, is the entrance to the spacious and well-sheltered harbour of Crookhaven, noticed in the article on that place. Here is a coast-guard station (usually called the Crookhaven station), being one of the nine included in the Skibbereen district. A dispensary has been established in the village.

(CE 10/9/1847) TO THE EDITOR OF THE CORK EXAMINER -Crookhaven, Sept. 6th, 1847 - SIR – A poor fisherman informed me of a large shoal of Hake that appeared in the bay of Crookhaven on the 26th of last August. A number of boats large and small were taking Hake with their handlines – from 120 to 200 fish, and upwards, night and day, on as average. On the 28th of August six yawls with trammel nets rowed close to those boats at anchor, and commenced shooting their trammel nets at five o clock in the evening. I saw an Act of Parliament prohibiting the boats’ crews from shooting their nets before sunset, and to haul them before sunrise in the morning. The penalty should be put in force, and those unlawful persons punished according to law. The depths of water in the Bay is 13 fathoms, which is considered very shoal for Hake. A few of them are taken, at present, outside the Bay. All the handline fishermen are greatly annoyed and very much sickened for their loss in the taking of the Hake. The Fishery Board ought immediately institute an inquiry into the case. – The Coast Guard Officer of Rock Island Station, if ordered with his boat’s crew, would protect the fishery, by giving them a stipend in addition to their salaries.Thrawling in the Bay and entrance of this harbour is very injurious to the fish spawning on the ground, and disperses the herrings. I saw several small ships boats thrawl up and down in this harbour. The poor fishermen were afraid to drive them away, they having fire arms in their boats. Bread is very much wanting for the use of the fishermen here. They cannot go to sea for the want of it; or go to Baltimore, where they are taking great quantitites of hake with the handline. There is plenty of bread at the stores of Richard Notter, Esq., Rock Island. I am greatly surprised that gentleman is not possessed of some feeling for the poor fishermen of Crookhaven. He ought to be friendly to them all as far as justice would oblige him. You will please, sir, to give this letter some space in your valuable journal. - I am, Sir, your obedient servant, ALEXANDER O DRISCOLL

(CE 19/1/1848) – GOLEEN, JAN. 14 —On the night of the 13th inst., about the hour of 12 o’clock, a fire broke out in the house of Mr. Thomas King, baker, in this village, his dwelling house, bake house, and some household furniture, with some accounts, were totally destroyed. During the time which the fire was raging, there were 1,000 pounds weight of bread put outside the house which were immediately laid hand on by the country people, and over 500 pounds of it purloined. I have this day visited the spot and to a certainty it was an accident. Damages are valued at or about £120. The Goleen police were the first who discovered the fire as they were on patrol, and were it not for their timely exertions much more damage would be done. No lives have been lost. (transcribed by Anita Sheahan Coraluzzi)

(CE 23/2/1848) - CROOKHAVEN, FEBRUARY 17- WIND S.W. -Arrived from Cork--RICHARD, of Berehaven, SULLIVAN. Landed at Rock Island 1 ton of rye meal and 4 sacks of rice for the Rev. Mr. A FISHER, two boxes of clothing, and for RICHARD NOTTER, Esq., 2 boxes of clothing, for the poor of the parish.

(CE 5/7/1848) -DENIS DRISCOLL, of the "Millstream" Crookhaven has already filled 20 barrels of oil taken from the whale found by his boat. It is considered that he can get from 60 to 80 more barrels full from it. An old whaler belonging to the "Mersey" now in Crookhaven says the oil is of the best description. Skull, July 3d, 1848.
