Some observations on the Foregoing Lists. There are only 11 (eleven) Protestants Familys, in, this Parish containing 77 persons who are of that Communion, and 31 persons besides, who are of the Popish Religion. There are 179 Popish Familys, among whom, there, is not a Protestant, though consisting of 1,010 (a thousand and ten) persons, whereof 490 are Males, and 520 are Females. There is no Popish Priest or Frier resident in this Parish of Litter; but Richard Welsh, a Popish Priest, who lives in Killatty, an adjoining Parish, which, it is said, he holds with other parishes, doth all duties for the Popish Inhabitants; but most of them attend the Popish Mass-house of Fermoy as the nearest to them. This Return, is made for, the Parish of Litter, in the Diocess of Cloyne, by me, Thomas Tuckey, Vicar.

PIGOT'S DIRECTORY 1824 – FERMOY

IN the county of Cork, is delightfully situated on the banks of the Blackwater, and is distant 108 miles south-west of Dublin, and 18 north-east of Cork. This place is a proof of what public spirited perseverance can effect; as in the rear 1796, when it came into the possession of the late John Anderson, Esq., it consisted only of a carman's inn, and a few wretched mud cabins, whereas now it is a regular well-built town, and contains an industrious and respectable population of six thousand inhabitants, exclusive of the numerous military stationed in the barracks. The first act of this enlightened individual was to improve the roads, and to establish mail coaches, both of which have materially contributed to the prosperity of Fermoy and the neighbouring country, as the high road from Dublin to Cork passes through them. The river divides the town into two unequal parts, the larger of which is on its southern bank. On the northern side are situated a large military hospital, two extensive barracks capable of containing five thousand men, and the church, which was built in 1802. In the other part are three hotels, an extensive ale and porter brewery, a considerable flour mill, a paper mill, a farming implement manufactory, a carriage manufactory, an endowed school, a court-house, where the sessions are held, and where a highly respectable bench of magistrates assemble for the weekly administration of justice, an excellent seminary for boarders under the direction of the Rev. Francis Jones, rector of the parish, and a spacious Catholic chapel, built in 1811. There is here every facility for the education of a family, as good masters in the different branches of literature and accomplishments are always to be had, and the markets are plentifully and cheaply supplied; the corn-market, in particular, is now one of the most considerable in Ireland. Fairs are held on the 21st of June, the 29th of August, and the 7th of November.

As he is determined never to slaughter an inferior Beast, and as he hopes to succeed by doing an extensive trade rather than by extracting large profits, he earnestly solicits a Trial, and confidently hopes that such Noblemen and Gentlemen as will so far honour him, will continue to favour him with their orders. N.B. – No partnership, or connexion with any other individual. Fermoy, 25th November, 1843

(CE 6/6/1845) – FERMOY UNION – Wednesday – The weekly meeting of the Board of Guardians was held at the usual hour. - THOMAS DENNEHY, Esq., in the Chair. – Other Guardians present – Messrs. Perrott, John O Neill, MD, Smyth, Carroll, Mackay, O Sullivan, Roche, Walsh, Kirby, Thornhill, Verling and Lomasny. The Rev. D. Delworth, CC, was also present during part of the proceedings.

THE STATE OF THE HOUSE

Admitted since: 58 – 481

Discharged during the week: 54

Remaining in the House: 427

Average weekly expenses of each pauper – 1s. 4 ¾ d.

A prostitute labouring under disease applied to be admitted for the purpose of being cured. It appearing that she was from another union, Mr. O Sullivan moved that she be rejected, and added, that since the discussion on the last day, mature reflection had induced him to alter his formed opinion, and that he would in future be disposed to reject this class of person. - Mr. Mackay having seconded it, the resolution was put from the Chair, when there appeared for it 6, against it 5. Majority for rejecting 1. - The Clerk then read a letter from the Commissioners pressing the Board to contract for vaccination. - Dr. O Neill said the board had been obliged to discontinue the contracts as they found that they could not get competent medical practitioners to undertake the duty at the low rate of remuneration appointed by the Commissioners. The operation had been performed in so careless and inefficient a manner in numerous cases as to be of no utility whatever. He regretted that the Union should be in this manner deprived of the benefit of the Vaccination Act, as he was aware himself of 14 or 15 cases of small pox, which had proved fatal, but he thought there was no use in advertising for tenders, until the Commissioners sanctioned an adequate remuneration which would induce respectable Medical or Surgical Practitioners to undertake the duty. He concluded by proposing a resolution in accordance with these views of the subject, which was carried unanimously. - The Clerk read another letter from the Commissioners, objecting to the resolution lately passed on the subject of Mendicancy. - Mr. Carroll said the resolution referred to was one of so salutary a nature that he had no doubt the Board, notwithstanding the opposition of the Commissioners, would continue to act on it. He moved – ‘That the practice of sending two paupers to attend at the coaches, or other public conveyances, with placard requesting the passengers not to encourage strolling beggars, is not attended with any practical inconvenience or injury to the discipline of the house as suggested by the Commissioners, and that the Board are of opinion that it should be persevered in.’ – Carried unanimously. - Tenders for the supply of milk for the next three months having been read, Edward Shinnick was declared Contractor at the rate of 2 ½ d. per imperial gallon. – Having disposed of the routine business the Board adjourned.

(CE 29/8/1845) – STUART’S STAR HOTEL AND TAVERN, Artillery Quay, Fermoy, Three Doors from the Square, near the Provincial Bank. R. Stuart takes leave to inform his Friends and the Public, Families and Commercial Gentlemen, that they will find Home Comfort, combined with Economy, at the above Establishment. To every person doing him the honour of a Trial the most particular attention will be paid. Moderate Charges and Well-aired Beds.

The Encouragement afforded to Diligence and Laudable Ambition in this Establishment are not surpassed by any similar one. It may be necessary to state, for the information of those not acquainted with the Situation of the College, that it is built at the distance of about 10 minutes; walk of the town, commanding a most delightful and extensive prospect, and surrounded by a walled-in Play Ground of several Acres, with a fine Ball Alley; that the House contains ample accommodation for a great number of Boarders; that such is the salubrity of the situation, that for 46 years, during which time the School has been established, not one Boarder had to leave through want of health. This is a fact which Mr. Robinson wishes may be known to the Parents and Guardians of Children.

The Modern Languages taught by a Native of Germany, on the usual terms; also, drawing by a Highly Qualified Teacher. No Expense is spared to procure the most efficient assistants.

SLATER'S 1846 DIRECTORY - FERMOY WITH THE PARISHES OF CLONDULANE, LITTER AND NEIGHBOURHOOD

FERMOY, a market and post town and parish, in the barony of Condons and Clongibbons, county of Cork, is 134 miles SW from Dublin, 38 SE from Limerick and 23 NE from Cork; finely situated on the Blackwater river, in the centre of an extensive and exceedingly fertile agricultural district. This place is said to have originated in the foundation of a Cistercian abbey by the family of the Roches, in the beginning of the twelfth century. In 1796, when the late John Anderson became its possessor, by purchase, it consisted only of a few mud cabins and the ruins of the old abbey; but in a few years, by the exertions of its enterprising and spirited owner, it became not only one of the prettiest inland towns in Ireland, but, during his proprietorship, one of considerable manufacture – and industry, comfort and respectability was soon apparent. In consequence of the unfortunate failure of Mr. Anderson's bank, the place subsequently became the property of Sir Robt. Abercromby, Bart., who is highly respected as a landlord, albeit, it is to be regretted, a non-resident. The improvements in the town, however, progress satisfactorily under the intelligent superintendence of Sir Robert's agent, Matthias Hendley, Esq., Several handsome houses have been recently built – two in the Elizabethan style of architecture, in Abercromby-place, are really elegant; and near the same site Frederick Bell, Esq., has erected a beautiful residence. The site, too, of the extensive brewery of Messrs Perrott & Co. has, by the happy means of the total abstinence movement, been appropriated to the erection of sober and comfortable dwellings, shops and warehouses. The bridge of seventeen arches, connecting the northern and southern portions of the town, is a noble structure. The prospect of a railway to Midleton has suspended the project of making the Blackwater navigable to the town. The staple trade of Fermoy is in corn and butter, of which considerable quantities are sent off. There are three flour mills and several nursery ground in the neighbourhood; those belonging to Mr. Baylor, called the ‘Woodbine Nursery,' and that of Mr. Reali, Ballyarthur, and of Mr. Fitzgerald, Barrack hill, merit especial notice. The National Bank of Ireland and the Provincial Bank have branches here, and there is a savings' bank and a loan fund. The government of the town is confided chiefly to the county and resident magistracy. General sessions of the peace are held twice a year, and petty sessions once a fortnight, in the court-house, a well arranged building, at the east end of the town. The barracks are remarkably commodious; a portion of the new barracks has been converted into a workhouse.

There are four edifices for public worship, namely, the church of the establishment erected in 1802; the Roman Catholic chapel in 1811; the Methodist chapel in 1820, and that for Presbyterians in 1837. The church is rather an elegant structure, with a square tower, formerly augmented by a spire, which, becoming insecure, was taken down some years since, but is about to be replaced by subscription. The late Mr. Anderson gave the site for the church, and nearly £3,000 towards its erection. The Roman Catholic chapel is likewise a handsome building, lately enlarged and embellished. The Methodist and Presbyterian chapels are small but neat buildings. The late Rev. Dr. William Adair endowed a school for teaching the useful branches of education; the present master has ably conducted this establishment for more than twenty years; there is also a school for females attached, superintended by the ladies of the town. There are national and infants schools and several private academies. A convent for nuns of the order of Presentation has been built in a handsome style, on the brow of a hill, to the south of the town, consisting of a centre and two wings; in one of the latter is a chapel, in the other a school-house for girls, who are carefully and gratuitously instructed by the ladies of the establishment. The environs of Fermoy abound with charming scenery, and numerous villas and mansions of the opulent. The market is held on Saturday. Fairs June 21st, August 20th, and November 7th. The population of the parish, in 1841, was 7,543, and the town 6,379 of that number.

CLONDULANE, a parish, partly in the barony of Fermoy, but chiefly in that of Condons and Clongibbons, contains a parish church, which is a small neat building, situated between two and three miles from Fermoy. At GLENDULLANE are extensive flour mills, built by the late Earl of Mountcashel. Population of the parish 1,823.

LITTER, or CASTLEHYDE parish, which lies contiguous to that of Fermoy, is intersected by the Blackwater river, by which it is divided into two, nearly equal parts. The principal seat is Castlehyde, the spacious and elegant manison of John Hyde, Esq., JP, beautifully situated on the northern bank of the Blackwater, in the midst of a highly picturesque and richly-wooded demesne, extending on both sides the river; and within its precincts are the ivied ruins of the ancient castle, which, at a former period, gave to the parish its name. The church of the parish is a small but neat building. The population of the parish is about two thousand.

(CE 6/1/1847) FERMOY QUARTER SESSIONS - THE MILITARY SHEEP STEALING CASE (Excerpt) - ‘In this case, Hope, Aspinal and M’Cord, three privates of the 47th Regiment, a detachment of which is stationed at Midleton, pleaded guilty to stealing a sheep, the property of Mr. Welland. - Mr. Baldwin, QC Assistant Barrister, pronounced sentence on the prisoners in the following terms. ‘….and it is our duty to pass the extreme sentence of the law, that is transportation beyond the seas for the term of ten years.’ - The prisoners heard the sentence apparently with indifference.’

(CE 23/6/1847) INCENDIARISM - On Sunday last, a quantity of hay and straw, the property, and in the haggard of Mr. Austen, JP, Fermoy, were discovered in flames. The Royal Scots Greys, and part of the 16th and 66th Depots were in prompt attendance, and were it not for their able exertion, the farmhouses immediately convenient to the conflagration would have become sharers in the general wreck. No reason can be assigned for this wanton incendiarism, save the noble exertion of the sufferer to benefit the public by reducing the number on the relief lists of the Fermoy Committee, in cutting off those from receiving gratuitous relief whom Providence has kindly enabled to purchase food. – Correspondent.

(CE 2/7/1847) MILITARY FRACAS - Sunday evening last some dozen soldiers of the 66th and 16th Regiments, stationed at Fermoy, had a dispute in one of the dancing-houses in the vicinity of the town; and alike all disputing between fellows whose trade is war, it quickly merged into a stand-up fight, and when the fame of their respective corps was at stake, it is almost needless to add that the belligerents shewed great pluck. Information of the row was quickly brought to the garrison by some anti-physical force disciple, when in a few minutes two picquets were marched to the scene of action and escorted back their respective men. But this was not the end of the affair, for the fighting heroes, when being marched to the barracks, of course informed their comrades of the caene belli, not forgetting to spice it with boasting that one regiment entertained the profoundest contempt for the want of valour in the other. The brave fellows, thus taunted, had only arrived at the barrack square, when they challenged each other to mortal combat. The word was scarcely uttered when they rushed on each other with fixed bayonets, and – mighty things might have been done were it not for the commanding officers, who, with flashing swords but pacific words, rushed between the contending hosts, and succeeded in separating those ‘dogs of war.’ The combatants were then marched to their respective quarters, amid hoarse shouts of ‘the 66th for ever,’ the ‘16th or Salamanders, for ever.’ Three of the soliders engaged in the fracas were subsequently put under arrest for trail by court martial.

(CE 5/6/1848) FORM YOUR CLUBS .......Form your Clubs, then, in every locality. The method of organising is simple and lawful. The end to be gained, important--the mode of gaining it, moral--the inducement to urge you on, the noblest that could fire humanity.

To-day, we are enabled, we believe, to announce the formation of three in the County--in Mallow, in Fermoy, and Bantry. Our Bantry correspondent only alludes to a meeting to be held there in a few days, for the purpose of testifying their devotion to the wife of JOHN MITCHEL--but we trust that meeting will not separate without organising their Club.

The JOHN MITCHEL Club of Fermoy is announced to meet the 4th of June. Our correspondent says: -- "Fermoy, June 3, 1848--You will perceive by the accompanying bills that there is a move here in the right direction. It is, however, I regret to say, exclusively confined to the working classes, those 'Pioneers of Liberty,' as poor MITCHEL called them." - Transcribed by Anita Sheahan Coraluzzi © 2002. (CE 7/6/1848) FORMATION OF CLUBS - FERMOY-THE JOHN MITCHEL CLUB [FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT] -  Fermoy, June 5th, 1848--This Club, which had sprung into existence within the last few days, and takes its name from the unconstitutional means resorted to by the authorities to victimize JOHN MITCHEL, who is now looked upon as a martyr of Irish liberty, held its first public meeting in Fermoy in Sunday last. The meeting, which was in the open air, was well attended, not withstanding it poured rain in torrents throughout the proceedings. There was rather a paucity of attendance as regards the "better classes", but their place was well supplied by poorer if not better and more patriotic men, those "Pioneers of Liberty" as MITCHEL would have called them.

The Chair was taken by Mr. D. TOOHIL, Mr. J. COLLINS was appointed as Secretary.

The Chairman explained that the objects of the meeting were to extend the organization of the Club to all creeds and classes, and establish a Reading Room and Library.

Mr. J. TATE proposed the 1st resolution, which attributed Irish misery to English misrule--he forcibly traced Irish ruin and distress, particularly amongst the mechanical, agricultural and labouring classes, to English misgovernments. He pointed out the resources which under domestic legislation might make Ireland one of the richest countries in the world, and concluded amidst loud cheers.

Mr. RIORDAN seconded this resolution; he pledged himself to use his best efforts by all constitutional means to free his oppressed country from the galling thraldom of a foreign yoke (cheers).

Mr. JOHN LYSAGHT, jun., proposed the second resolution as to extending the organization of the Club, and establishing a Reading Room. He said the time had come to sink all Sectarian differences, and referred amidst much cheering to the Protestant Repeal Association of Dublin. He said the days of party ascendancy had happily passed away, and he hoped ere long whether he was here or in another country to rejoice at the restored nationality of Ireland (cheers).

Mr. WM. BARRETT seconded this resolution; -- he said there had been much bickering amongst certain persons as to the title of the Club--that the men whom he had seen last week, with sorrow depicted on their countenances, and who said they would share their last shilling with the family of JOHN MITCHEL, were now afraid to join a Club called after him. For my part, said Mr. BARRETT, I will never disown him (tremendous cheers), and I hope, neither will you, to please the whining servility of any man or men. We will have no re-baptism (cheers). It in incumbent on no man on joining this Club to identify himself with all the sentiments of JOHN MITCHEL. After calling on the meeting to enrol themselves as members, Mr. BARRETT retired amidst loud cheers.

Mr. J. COLLINS proposed the next resolution, which was condemnatory of the means resorted to, to obtain a conviction against Mr. MITCHEL. He explained the object of the proposed Club, the advantages to be derived from a Reading-room and Library, the necessity of combined action, and called, in strong terms, amidst much cheers, upon all classes, particularly the young working men, to conciliate and co-operate with each other to educate and organize, but of all things to unite (cheers).

The Chief and a party of Police were in attendance at the meeting, and a Stipendiary Magistrate from Mitchelstown arrived in town, it was said, for the occasion, but not the slightest tendency to disorder could be observed. - Transcribed by Anita Sheahan Coraluzzi © 2002. All Rights Reserved.
