Military Execution in Cork in 1801 - The piece of ground between the western end of the Mardyke Walk and the southern branch of the river Lee, and extending from the grounds of the Dyke House (formerly called the Red House, the Mardyke being originally the Red House Walk) to a stream which once ran from the river to the now obliterated south moat of the Mardyke at a point a little nearer the city than the present path leading from the Mardyke opposite the Ferry Walk to the Western Road, was called in the first quarter of the present century 'the camp field,' because soldiers often exercised in it, and sometimes in the summer camped out in it. It was then a fine open field, for the Western road was not constructed until many years afterwards. I have often heard my father, who was born in 1801, say that he had frequently heard persons who had been present at the military execution enacted on Tuesday, 30th of June in that year, describe it, and that one of these persons had several times pointed out to him a particular spot in this camp field as approximately the place where the man was shot; and I remember that my father used to say that as well as he could recollect, this spot was a pace or two south of the road wall, and about a dozen paces west of the gateway opening on the causeway which now crosses the field at the river side of the road. The account of the execution given my father by persons present at it was this: - The condemned man, Joseph America, a private in Baron Hompesch's regiment of (I believe) dragoons, who had been sentenced to death for disobeying orders and firing at his sergeant, was placed facing the Mardyke, he knelt on his coffin with a handkerchief tied over his eyes. Many soldiers under arms and very many civilians were present. The firing party of (I think) twelve men, in two ranks, commanded by an officer and closely watched by a sergeant, stood where about the middle of the road is now. When the soldiers fired and the man fell forward dead, the people gave a low moaning cry, which was immediately hushed to the stillness of death when the surgeon went forward and stooped over the body. The next minute the troops marched past, the body was thrown into the blood-stained coffin, the cover was nailed down, and the common cart which had carried the wretched man to his doom, hurried away with his corpse. All present agreed that he met death with the greatest firmness. Probably the spot indicated was chosen because opposite that place the bank at the other side of the river rises precipitously into a kind of bluff which would effectually stop any stray bullet. However, I believe that in this instance 'every bullet had its billet' in the body of this the last soldier every shot by order of court-martial in Cork. - ((Contributed by W.)
