The town of Bantry is in the civil parish of Kilmocomoge. It is located within the poor law union of Bantry, in the barony of Bantry.

The area was called Kilgoban in ancient times.
In 1581, the garrison was unsuccessfully attacked by Goran MacSweeney, a mercenary soldier.
In 1691, a Dutch ship was captured by the natives for King James II.
In 1796, a French invasion was aborted due to bad weather.
In 1843, bad weather prevented French troops from docking in Bantry Bay. The invasion planned by Theobald Wolfe Tone was thus aborted.

N71 leads into Bantry from the southwest, continues along The Quay, then continues northwards, leaving town, along Glengarriff Road.
Bus Éireann's Line 252 runs from Cork to Skibbereen, then on to Bantry, Glengarriff, Kenmare, and Killarney. Line 236 runs from Cork through Bandon, Dunmanway, Drimoleague, Bantry, Glengarriff, Adrigole, and Castletownbere.
