History

Imokilly is in northeast Cork, bordered by Barrymore and Kinnatalloon on its west side, and bordering Waterford.

From JCHAS:

Derived by Dr. Donovan from Io Maccaille, the name of an ancient Irish sept of which MacTire was the chief at the Anglo-Norman Invasion, and who was very active in trying to expel the invaders. Several chieftains of this district are mentioned in The Annals of the Four Masters. In 901, Glaissini, son of Uisseni, lord of Ui-Maccaille, died; in 1135, the son of Lochlainn Ua Cinaeda (O'Kenny), lord of Ui-Maccaille, was slain; in 1157, Gillagott Ua Carrain (O'Kerne, lord of Ui-Maccaile, was slain, etc. Maccaile means, it is surmised, "son of the wood;" others derive Imokilly from Ibh-a-cill-liath, "the county of the grey church;" or from Ibh-a-coill-liath, signifying a wooded county. A nunnery is said to have been established at Killeagh in this barony by St. Abban in the seventh century, with St. Conchere as prioress. At the Anglo-Norman invasion the district was in the possession of the O'Ronaynes, O'Lomasneys, and O'Brigans. The de Rupes, or Roches, got possession at an early period of the south-western part, and the Fitzgeralds, Earls of Desmond, of the north-eastern. A branch of the Fitzgeralds, residing at Ballymartyr, now Castlemartyr, were called Seneschals of Imokilly. Their castle was strongly fortified, and commanded the pass from Cork to Youghal. Youghal, with a charter dating from 1209, is in this barony, and in ancient times was an important fortified town. Castlemartyr, by the interest of the first Earl of Orrery, in 1671 received a charter of incorporation.
