Barony of Condons and Clangibbon
Condúnaigh agus Clann Ghiobúin

Condons and Clangibbon
Figure 1. Barony of Condons and Clangibbon, east of Fermoy.

History

From JCHAS:

Condons & Clangibbons. These constitute one barony. Condons formed part of the ancient territory of Fearna-Maighe-Feine, of which the O'Keeffes were chieftains or princes. Fleming was the first Norman knight who had possession of these parts, a family now represented the Roches, barons of Fermoy. The Condons, or Cantons, were a Norman family, and had castles and large possessions in this district up to a late period. Clangibbon was anciently called Ivvela-bane, "the white or fair territory," or, perhaps, "the White Knight's country." Maurice, head of the Clan Gibbon, was the first that bore the title of "White Knight." At the battle of Hallidon Hill three cousins, Fitzgeralds, specially distinguished themselves, for which they were knighted on the field by Edward III. One he knighted as the "White Knight," another as the "Black Knight" (ancestor of the knights of Glin), and the third as the "Green Knight" (represented by the Knights of Kerry). The earls of Desmond, as princes-palatine of Ireland, were invested with power to create barons, etc., and they are said to have made this knighthood transmissible in the male line. In two cases the titles have been handed down from father to son to the present time - a period of 600 years. From the heiress of the last White Knight, who died without male issue, descend the Earls of Kingston.
